SER MVP of the Week: Clint Dempsey

In a battle for the last UEFA Cup spot, Fulham and Manchester City put on a startling show, which was dominated by an American from start to finish, earning Clint Dempsey, SER MVP of the Week. Dempsey, who has been on sensation form of late for the Cottagers, netted two goals in Fulham’s crucial win over Man City, making Fulham’s European spot look more secure. Dempsey’s first came in the 50th minute, when Bobby Zamora’s run was halted by Micah Ricahards, but the defender tapped it to the waiting American, who expertly curled the ball home past Shay Given. His second, and Fulham’s third came in the 82nd minute, when Zamora once again was spear-heading a counter attack, and laid the ball infront of the onrushing Dempsey, who nutmegged Shay Given for the win. These two goals won the American, Clint Dempsey this week’s SER MVP of the Week.

Mark Hughes and Manchester City made a controversial move which attracted a lot of press, when they decided to sit record signing Robinho at the beginning of the crucial clash. City managed early on without the Brazilian star, when Stephen Ireland dribbled a lengthy way and had a spectacular shot which dipped over Mark Schwarzer, leaving the Auzzie watching. Fulham struck back after the break with Clint Dempsey slotting the ball past Shay given in the 50th, and then eight minutes later, Dickson Etuhu, the Nigerian national, struck a beauty to put the Cottagers in front. Dempsey sealed the victory with a calm finish in the 82nd minute, tightening Fulham’s grasp on the last European spot.
